The second harbour crossing has been discussed since the previous bridge was constructed, with no clear way forward, only layers of consultancy. What should be the direction looking forward?

With NZTA's geotechnical investigations complete and a decision due by mid-2026, the options are a road-focused tunnel, an adjacent multi-modal bridge, or Mayor Wayne Brown's Meowa Reef alignment.

Q.1.2 — Transport

The second harbour crossing has been discussed since the previous bridge was constructed, with no clear way forward, only layers of consultancy. What should be the direction looking forward?

With NZTA's geotechnical investigations now complete and a final decision due by mid-2026, the current options boil down to:

  • A road-focused tunnel (or tunnels) near the existing Auckland Harbour Bridge alignment — potentially very expensive (past estimates ballooned beyond $20–25 billion), with uncertain or limited dedicated public transport integration.
  • A new bridge adjacent to the current Harbour Bridge carrying road lanes plus bus/light rail and active transport.
  • Mayor Wayne Brown's Meowa Reef alignment (Pt Chevalier to Little Shoal Bay) — claimed shorter and cheaper but with potential environmental and connectivity trade-offs.

Tolling on the new (and possibly existing) crossing is also on the table for funding. Which of these do you support, or do you have a better idea?
