(AC-LB, checked 19 October 2026)

What decisions can an Auckland local board make?

Local boards decide local issues, activities and services. They adopt three-year local board plans, approve annual operational and capital work programmes, and decide local matters including events, parks, community programmes and local fees and charges. They oversee local facilities and make some transport decisions for local and collector roads assigned to them. (AC-LB)

The transport decisions are limited to roads assigned to local boards through the Auckland Roading Classification Framework. (AC-LB)

How are Auckland's local boards funded?

Auckland's 21 local boards have budgets of about $515.4 million for operating spending and $236.5 million for capital spending in 2026/2027, up from $490.9 million and $212.3 million in 2025/2026 (Annual Plan 2026/2027, Volume 2, section 1.3). Do local boards set their own budgets?

Not alone. Each local board agrees a local board agreement with the Governing Body. It sets out what the council will deliver in the board's area in the next financial year, and it is included in Auckland's annual and long-term plans and budgets. The board then approves annual work programmes that put the agreement into practice. (AC-LB, checked 19 October 2026)

What is a local board plan?

A local board plan is a strategic, three-year plan that sets the direction for a local board area. It is developed in consultation with the community. Work programmes and local board agreements are expected to follow it. Each board's current plan is published on Auckland Council's "All local boards" pages. (AC-LB)

For a critical look at how similar the 21 plans are, see City Builders' Council Watch dispatch Are Auckland's 21 local board plans really different? (opinion).

Can a local board make bylaws?

No, but it can start one. A local board can identify and develop bylaws for its area and propose them to the Governing Body, which decides whether to make them. The Governing Body can also delegate extra responsibilities to local boards, such as some decisions under regional bylaws. (AC-LB, checked 19 October 2026)

How do local boards relate to the Governing Body and council organisations?

Local boards give the Governing Body local views on regional strategies, policies, plans and bylaws, and advise it on regional decisions that affect their area. They decide any extra responsibilities the Governing Body delegates. They also contribute to plans and initiatives of council-controlled organisations such as Auckland Transport. (AC-LB)

How can I speak at or contact my local board?

Every local board has its own standing orders, which are the rules for its meetings, including how members of the public can speak. Auckland Council's "Speak at a local board meeting" page explains the process for each board. For contact details, use City Builders' How do I contact my Auckland local board? or the council's "All local boards" pages. (AC-LB)
