Auckland Historic Heritage by Local Board

A structured overview of scheduled historic heritage places across Auckland's 21 local board areas. Auckland's historic heritage is managed primarily through Auckland Unitary Plan Schedule 14.1, with places listed in Categories A, A* and B, plus Historic Heritage Areas. The criteria sit in Section B5.2.2. approximately 1,900–2,000 scheduled places exist. Protection is incomplete: many places of local significance remain unscheduled, and listing on the New Zealand Heritage List provides recognition but not automatic protection.

A*Category A*

BCategory B

Places of considerable heritage value.

HHAHistoric Heritage Area

Methodology

How to read this page

Data is drawn from Auckland Unitary Plan Schedule 14.1 and Auckland Council open data. This page is awareness material only. Examples below are illustrative, not exhaustive; the full list lives in Schedule 14.1 and must be filtered by local board boundary for completeness.

Process

How places are added

Nominate

Anyone can nominate a place to the Auckland Council Heritage Unit for evaluation against the B5.2.2 thresholds (historic, cultural, social, scientific, archaeological, architectural and technological values).

Plan change

Successful nominations are added through a plan change to the Unitary Plan. Only once scheduled does a place receive statutory protection from demolition, modification or relocation.

Heritage covenants (HNZPT Act 2014, s39)

The strongest tool for private land, but it requires owner consent. A covenant binds future owners and is registered on the title.

Recognition vs protection

Listing on the New Zealand Heritage List (Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga) provides recognition but does not automatically protect a place. 'Community association' and 'public education' values are supported in policy but create no legal protection on their own.
