Water rose from $2.296 to $2.46 per 1,000 litres, wastewater from $3.994 to $4.28, and the fixed wastewater charge from $332 to $355.90 per meter a year. What changed on 1 July 2026?

Watercare's price changes, announced on 3 June 2026 (Watercare via Scoop):

  • Water: $2.296 to $2.46 per 1,000 litres
  • Wastewater: $3.994 to $4.28 per 1,000 litres
  • Fixed wastewater charge: $332 to $355.90 per meter each year

For the average household paying around $120 a month, Watercare says this is an increase of about $2 a week. RNZ reported the same change as about $8 a month. (RNZ)

Why are prices rising?

Watercare says it will invest $13.8 billion over the next decade, about half to expand the network for growth and half to renew existing assets. The increase was signalled under its regulated funding framework, introduced after Watercare became financially separate from Auckland Council in July 2025. (Watercare via Scoop)

Is this part of my rates bill?

No. Watercare bills water and wastewater separately from council rates. For council rates, see Auckland rates explained.

Yes. See What are Watercare Infrastructure Growth Charges?.

Who regulates Watercare's prices?

Watercare says the Watercare Charter, introduced by the Government in 2025, sets the framework for pricing while longer-term economic regulation is developed. (Watercare via Scoop)
